Crown lengthening procedure is performed when not enough of the tooth sticks out above the gum to support a filling or crown.

Preparing for a Crown Lengthening Procedure

Your dentist may fit you with a temporary crown until your procedure. The temporary crown secures your tooth in the interim and make the fitting of your new crown easier.

Before the surgery, your medical history and X-rays will be reviewed. During this appointment, you should talk to your dentist about any medications you take. They’ll let you know if you need to discontinue any of them for the procedure.

Crown Lengthening Procedure

During the crown lengthening procedure, excess gum and bone tissue are reshaped to expose more of the natural tooth. This can be done to one tooth, your entire gum line, or to several teeth, to expose a natural, broad smile.

Your dentist may also advise crown lengthening to make a restorative or cosmetic dental procedure possible. Perhaps your tooth is decayed, broken beneath the gum line, or has inadequate tooth structure for a restoration like a crown or bridge.

The Recovery Process

The duration of the recovery for this procedure is approximately three months. However, you’ll be able to resume normal activities as your gums heal. The most important thing is to avoid strenuous activities for the first two to three days.

Use an ice pack
Avoid hot foods and drinks for the first 24 hours
Leave dressings in for 7 to 14 days
Brush carefully
Wear your stent or denture
Eat a soft food diet
Avoid alcohol
Avoid smoking
Avoid prodding the area
